Present system of triple talaq wrong, needs reform: Siasat editor

Extending support to the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIPMLB) against the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, Siasat Daily's chief editor, Zahid Ali Khan, has asked all Muslims to oppose its introduction and implementation.

"We oppose Uniform Civil Code and we support the stand taken by the Muslim law board. I think all Muslims in India, including those who follow different sects and are governed by different laws, should stand united and oppose its implementation," Khan told ANI.

He, however, admitted that the practice of triple talaq is wrongly being practiced in the country. Khan said illiteracy among Muslims is the main reason for such practices to continue.

"There is a wrong perception among people that saying talaq thrice amounts to termination of marriage, there are certain restrictions to it. Triple talaq stands invalidated if a wife becomes pregnant and if the lady is under menses," Khan said.

"Proper rules and regulations have been framed in the Quran and Hadees (sayings of Prophet Muhammad) to safeguard against such practices. If we enforce, the present system of triple talaq can be avoided," he added.

Khan further pointed out that Islam provides more dignity and respect to women than any other religion.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), along with several other organisations associated with the Muslim community, has opposed the Law Commission's questionnaire on the possibility of the UCC, declaring that the move amounts to Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government declaring "war" on their religious rights.

The threat of Muslim organisations to "boycott" the Law Commission questionnaire also comes in the backdrop of the Supreme Court hearing a challenge to triple talaq where the Centre termed the custom unconstitutional and violative of gender equality.
