Kane Williamson, who recently became the world number one Test batsman, has downplayed all the praise directed at him, saying that the record meant more to him because he was able to contribute more towards New Zealand's winning cause.
The 25-year-old prolific batsman finished the year with 1172 runs, surpassing skipper Brendon McCullum's record of 1164 runs to reach the milestone of scoring most Test runs by a New Zealander in a calendar year.
Williamson capped off a remarkable year by remaining unbeaten on 108, his 13th century, during his side's five-wicket win in the second match against Sri Lanka on Monday.
Reflecting on his stellar knock, the batting mainstay said that he was pleased with his performance and admitted that he felt glad to be recognized as the number one, Stuff.co.nz reported.
Describing his path towards attaining the numero uno position, Williamson said that he focuses on one game at a time and tries to prepare best for it accordingly.
Williamson also made a test double century, four other centuries and four half-centuries in this season
With the win, New Zealand have also clinched the series 2-0 against Sri Lanka and extended their winning streak at home to 13.
New Zealand will now take on Sri Lanka in a five-match ODI series and two Twenty20 matches to follow.
