SC rejects plea seeking Jallikattu ban order review

The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a plea for a review of its order to ban the bull-taming sport of Jallikattu.

With the apex court staying the Centre's nod for Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar had yesterday said the notification had not been quashed and his Ministry would explain its case before the apex court.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa had earlier urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promulgate an ordinance to facilitate holding of the traditional sports.

In Tamil Nadu, the opposition parties today had staged a walk out from the state Assembly against Jallikattu ban.

The DMK member MK Stalin insisted that an ordinance should be promulgated by the state government to allow the sport. Left parties wanted the assembly to adopt a resolution seeking revival of the traditional bull-taming game.

However, senior minister O.Panneerselvam said the state chief minister J.Jayalalithaa is resolved to bring the game back through legal measures.

Panneerselvam blamed the Congress-led UPA Government in which the DMK was a part saying the former government only included bulls in the list of banned animals for public display. Not satisfied by the reply, the DMK, Left Parties and Congress members staged a walked out.

The Centre had on January 7 issued a notification enabling conduct of Jallikattu in various parts of Tamil Nadu as a part of Pongal celebrations, following a request by the Chief Minister.
