Indian swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag has announced that he will soon retire from international cricket in order to play in next year's Masters Champions League, a UAE-based Twenty20 tournament where only retired players can participate.
The 37-year-old, who is popularly known as the 'Nawab of Najafgarh', said during an MCL event in Dubai that he would officially announce his retirement soon to take part in the tournament, ESPNcricinfo reported.
Sehwag made his last international appearance during India's second Test against Australia in March 2013 and has been out of the national team since. However, he continued to play domestic cricket and captains Haryana team in this season's Ranji Trophy.
He holds multiple records including the highest score made by an Indian in Test cricket (319) and the fastest triple century in the history of international cricket (he scored 300 in 278 balls).
Sehwag has played 104 tests and scored 8,586 runs at an average of 49.34 and has amassed 8,273 runs at an average of 35.05 in 251 ODIs.
