Series defeat in England a 'learning curve' for young Lanka: Mathews

Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews has insisted that the Test series defeat against England was a good learning curve for the young players, who are now better prepared for the upcoming challenge against Australia.

Lanka had head into the series hoping to replicate their 2014 series-winning efforts, but they suffered a 0-2 defeat in the three-match series against England.

Despite the loss, Mathews believes that his team has improved a lot and is presently better placed.

"There are lots of positives to come out of this series. The fast bowlers bowled extremely well right throughout the series. It was slightly difficult for them but still they had to bowl really well and they did," the skipper was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

The 29-year-old also heaped praise on Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal for their superb batting performance against England.

"Also the way Mendis and Chandimal batted was pleasing. Yes we didn't win the series but we can take a lot away from the way we played in this series," he said.

Reflecting on the upcoming series, Mathews called on his young team to play as a unit if they want to make a massive difference against the Steve Smith-led side.

Lanka will play three Tests, five ODIs and two T20s against Australia, starting from July 26 at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Balagolla.
