Snapchat has reportedly apologised for the first time since its users' data was compromised recently and has also issued a security patch for its photo-sharing service.

The auto-destruct photo-sharing service was hit by malicious attackers who revealed phone numbers of 4.6 million of its users after matching them with their ids via secret code.

Security researchers had warned the company about the security loophole, which the company had claimed was due to the 'Find Friends' feature.

According to Fox News, Snapchat said that its team is making improvements to prevent future attempts to abuse programming interface, adding that they were sorry for any problems the issue triggered.

Snapchat had promised a more secure version of its app following the breach, which allowed hackers to collect the usernames and phone numbers of 4.6 million of its users.

The company has released an update to its Android and iPhone apps that "improves Find Friends functionality" and users can avoid linking their usernames with phone numbers, the report added.
