Former Sri Lanka bowler Ashantha de Mel has been appointed as the head of Sri Lanka's new selection panel by Sri Lanka Cricket.
De Mel will be assisted by three other former national players- Brendon Kuruppu, Hemantha Wickramaratne, and Chaminda Mendis- in the committee.
According to an official release from the Sri Lanka Cricket, the decision to appoint a new selection committee was taken on the recommendations of the recently-appointed Cricket Advisory Committee.
The previous National Selection Panel, along with its head Graeme Labrooy, was discharged of its duties by Sri Lanka sports minister Faiszer Musthapa who "thanked them for the services rendered towards Sri Lanka Cricket, as national selectors."
The move came in the backdrop of Sri Lanka's disappointing performance in the first two Tests of the ongoing five-match series against England.
The first task of the new selection panel will be to select the squad for the upcoming New Zealand tour, which includes two Tests, three ODIs and one-off T20 international.
