According to the National Disaster Management Center (DMC), around 11 people have died and over 100,000 were affected from the floods and landslides caused due to heavy rains in Sri Lanka.
The adverse weather conditions prevailing in Sri Lanka have battered 18 districts since May 19. People died of incidents like drowning in floodwaters, tree falls and earth-slips. Five people have died from lightning strikes, Colombo Page reported.
The Department of Meteorology said that in the next few days, thundershowers could be expected in many parts of the country.
The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has extended the landslide warning to another four districts.
Low lying areas like Ranbima, Welihinda, and Yakadagalla were submerged.
The DMC said 557 military and police officials were mobilized for search and rescue operations. Around 5,826 military and police personnel are for immediate deployment.
To address the needs of the affected people, the National Disaster Relief Services Centre has provided Rs. 14.7 million cash allocations to the 12 District Secretaries.
