The Sri Lankan military has reportedly destroyed one of the final places where the leader of the Tamil Tiger militants Velupillai Prabhakaran lived.

Prabhakaran was the founder of the rebel group and led it for 25 years before its eventual defeat by the army and was killed in May 2009 as the army captured the last area of rebel-held territory in northern Sri Lanka.

According to the BBC, after the separatist war ended in 2009, Prabhakaran's house and its deep bunker had become a tourist attraction for Sri Lankan visitors.

However, on Thursday evening, the army asked the people living near the bunker, to evacuate their homes, as the officials prepared to blow up Prabhakaran's house.

The report said that the bunker, found in 2009, contained sound-proof electricity generators, air conditioning and medical supplies apart from numerous weapons surveillance cameras.

The army had been promoting the bunker as an internal tourist attraction, along with other rebel facilities nearby, but called it a 'temporary phenomenon', and since the bunker had been de-mined there was no reason to keep the 'ghosts of terrorism', the report added.
