Tibetan PM-in-exile emphasises on quality, primary education

Tibetan prime minister-in-exile Lobsang Sangay has laid emphasis on quality education, strengthening primary education and professional development of teachers during a conference held here.

More than 200 Tibetan teachers and senior school staff members attended the sixth Tibetan General Conference on Education.

Speaking at the conference, Sangay lauded the literacy rate in the Tibetan community.

"We have done pretty well as far as the literacy rate is concerned because Tibetan community's literacy rate is 84 percent. Having said that, but we need to really improve from quality sense so that after they graduate from high school they can go to IIM (Indian Institute of Management), IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) and the leading universities around the world," he said.

The department of education of the Tibetan government-in-exile had organised a three-day conference which concluded on Thursday.

The participants discussed issues relating to education and schools in the exiled Tibetan community during the conference.

A senior education specialist, Kelsang Wangdu, said the basic education policy of the Central Tibetan Administration was also discussed at the conference.

"In this sixth conference we are focusing on three main issues - one is strengthening primary education, which is really the foundation of all education and then the professional development of teachers and then we are discussing on the basic education policy of the Central Tibetan Administration." said Wangdu.
