At least two people were killed while another sustained injuries after a speeding car hit pedestrians at Delhi's Janak Puri area this morning.
"The incident took place at around 6 to 6:30 when my uncle was coming from his morning walk. The car hit him from back. There were three to four boys in the car. Out of which only one got arrested. They were so drunk that they were asking for cigarettes from the cops during questioning," Arjun, one of the relatives of the victim, told ANI.
"The police brought the accused at around 7 a.m. The police took the boys for a medical check-up on our request. They were drunk," added another relative of the victim.
In April this year, one person was killed and three others were injured as a speeding BMW car hit them in Noida's Sector 22.
In another incident, a 32-year-old man was killed when a juvenile ran over him in Delhi's posh civil lines area on April 4. The court has now ordered that the juvenile be tried as an adult in the case.
While Mumbai saw the highest number of accidents of all cities in the country, Delhi topped the list of fatalities with 1622 deaths last year.
These were some of the statistics Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari released for the year 2015.
"It doesn't make me happy to release this data but I want it to get the attention it deserves," he said.
