Former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Shazia Ilmi on Tuesday said that merely imposing a ban on certain taxi services in the light of the recent Uber Cab rape case would not achieve the desired result, and instead suggested a complete overhaul of the entire public transport system to ensure the safety of women.

"Putting a ban on a private taxi agency won't solve the matter. The entire transport system needs to have safety measures for women," Ilmi told ANI here.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Transport Department told media that the vehicle used in the incident had violated existing travel and traffic norms.

"The vehicle was working in New Delhi as local cab as against a permit for all India. Whatever civil and criminal action is to be taken against anyone will be taken," Transport Department Special Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Ganger said.

The Delhi Police has lodged an FIR against Uber for cheating customers on the pretext of providing safe commuting with duly verified driver. The police will also reportedly continue questioning officials of the taxi service in Delhi.

The Delhi Government had on Monday banned Uber from functioning in the national capital even as the company issued a statement assuring its full co-operation to help the victim and her family in their recovery.

Reports say the Uber cab driver accused of raping the finance executive on Friday, had been convicted for a similar crime in 2011 and had spent over seven months in prison. However, he was later acquitted in that case.
