US asks Ghani, Abdullah to work together

The United States on Tuesday reaffirmed its support for the National Unity government in Afghanistan, and urged both President Ashraf Ghani and CEO Abdullah Abdullah to work out their differences to achieve common goals for their nation.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau said Washington encourages President Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah to work together to pursue these common goals.

"So, we've seen Chief Executive Abdullah's public remarks regarding President Ghani and the Government of National Unity. We remain supportive of a government of national unity, and we encourage both President Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah to work together to pursue these common goals," Khaama Press quoted Trudeau, as saying.

She was responding to a question regarding the latest upheavals in the Afghan issue.

"We do remain in touch with the Afghan Government and we will remain in touch as they move forward," she added.

Chief Executive Abdullah made the remarks during a gathering in Kabul on Thursday, where he said he had struggled to achieve much progress with President Ghani during the two years of their government on the issue of electoral reform.

He also pointed out that President Ghani does not have time for him even in months to have one-on-one meeting.

He then insisted that "if someone does not have the patience for discussion, then they are not fit for the presidency, either."

The office of the President, then said that Abdullah's remarks are not in line with the standards and spirit of governance and insisted that principles and legal criteria forms the basis of governance based on which the executive steps are taken.

The office further added the Government of national unity will continue to its work on collective basis and that effective discussions will be launched regarding the remarks made by Abdullah.
