We congratulate AAP on win; will analyse reasons for defeat: BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday congratulated the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on their landslide victory in the Delhi assembly elections, adding that they will carry out a study to find out reasons for their loss.

"Every election has a result; this time it has gone in their favour. I congratulate [the AAP]. My best wishes are with them for the future," Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Coal, Power and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal told the media.

"We will analyse [the defeat] and let you know. There will be a study to find that out," he added.

Union Minister Ananth Kumar echoed similar views, adding that he respects the verdict of the people.

"The people of Delhi have given their verdict and we respect that. We will find out reasons for our poor performance," he said.

The minister, however, said that the 'Modi wave' has not ebbed out as it is a national trend.

"Modi ji's wave of development is still there. The Delhi elections were regional elections, whereas the 'Modi wave' can be seen across the nation," he said.

In a major setback for the BJP and the Congress, the AAP won the elections, with the Arvind Kejriwal-led party leading in 67 of the 70 assembly seats up for grabs, as of 2 pm.

The BJP, which was relying heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity and had also brought in former IPS officer Kiran Bedi as its chief ministerial candidate to counter Kejriwal, managed to secure just three seats.

The Congress, which had ruled the national capital for 15 years up to 2013 and was trying to rebuild its lost ground in Delhi, lost from every seat it contested.
