Woods expecting to be selected in US Ryder Cup team

Former World No. 1 Tiger Woods is of the opinion that he deserves a place in the United States Ryder Cup team despite a disappointing display at the Open Championship and his recent injury problems.

The 14-time major winner finished 69th at Royal Liverpool, 23 shots behind winner Rory McIlroy and looks unlikely to qualify automatically for September's match against holders Europe at Gleneagles.

Woods believes that US captain Tom Watson would pick him as one of his three wildcards, The BBC reported.

Following back surgery in March, which forced him to miss the year's first two majors, Woods managed only two competitive rounds in the build-up to the Open at Hoylake, where he won in 2006.

Earlier this week Watson had hinted that the American golf ace would need to qualify for next month's FedExCup play-off series in order to secure a place.

Woods was 72nd in the US Ryder Cup standings before the Open, with only the top nine players qualifying automatically for the team. He was 212th on the FedExCup points list, with only the top 125 players qualifying for the four-tournament series.

Woods said that he would like to win the next two tournaments he is in and that should take care of it. But, he said that Corey Pavin picked him when they played in Wales in 2010 where he was coming off an injury, with his Achilles, and sat out most of the summer.

Woods said that Watson is the captain and it is obviously his decision, adding that he's going to field the best 12 players that he thinks would win the Cup back. Woods said that he hopes that he is on that team.
