Former IPS officer Y P Singh on Monday demanded the custodial interrogation of comedian Tanmay Bhat for making fun of two of Maharashtra's best known legends Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar for what he dubbed as cognizable offence.

The former top cop told ANI that the accused is already facing criminal proceedings in this specific case.

"The offence is being repeated, this is a very serious matter. Such an accused person should be immediately placed under custodial interrogation and should be put up for trial in the court of law so that he could be punished as per the provision of law," said Singh.

"If this legal proceeding is not done immediately then it will appear that principle of rule of law is failing," he added.

Singh further said this country is governed by the principle of rule of law, adding nobody has got the right to take the law in his own hands.

"In this pacific case, there are clear cut violations of law. Now, number one is if someone put abusive or obscene words on the internet, it is an offence under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, which is a cognizable offence," said Singh.

"Second offence is speaking obscene words, which the public can hear. So, this again is an offence under Section 294 of the Indian Penal Code, which is a cognizable offence," he added.

The AIB comedian earlier drew flak from the Shiv Sena and NCP leaders, who demanded immediate action against him.

Several Bollywood celebrities, including actors Anupam Kher and Riteish Deshmukh, criticised the comedian for "insulting" the diva of Indian film music and the master blaster.

"I am 9 times winner of #BestComicActor. Have a great sense of humor. But This's NOT humor. #Disgusting&Disrespectful," Kher tweeted.

"Am absolutely shocked. Disrespect is not cool and neither is it funny," Riteish, who will be seen in the upcoming romantic comedy film 'Housefull 3', wrote on Twitter.
