Railways revenue rises 5.9% in February 2020

Freight revenue rebounds 4.1% after sixth straight months of decline

The Indian Railway (IR) has recorded 5.9% increase in its overall revenues to Rs 16181.70 crore in February 2020 over February 2019. The IR revenues had moved up 7.0% to Rs 15280.91 crore in February 2019.

The passenger earnings increased 12.7% to Rs 4559.10 crore in February 2020, against 4.8% growth recorded in February 2019. The earnings from freight traffic, accounting for 67.2% of the total revenue, moved up 4.1% to Rs 10876.13 crore in February 2020, while snapping consistent decline for last six straight months. However, the other coaching revenue fell -0.1% to Rs 359.89 crore, while the revenue from sundry activities also declined -10.0% to Rs 386.58 crore in February 2020.

In April-February FY2020, the revenue earnings of IR declined -0.7% to Rs 165070.18 crore, while snapping 7.5% rise recorded in April-February FY2019. The IR revenues have been below the budget target of Rs 187429.34 crore for the above mentioned period.

The goods revenue declined -2.8% to Rs 108658.41 crore, while the passenger revenue increased 4.8% to Rs 48800.86 crore. The other coaching revenue increased 1.9% to Rs 4350.50 crore, but the sundry earnings declined -10.3% to Rs 3260.41 crore in April-February FY2020.

Freight Loading

Freight loading of the IR increased 6.5% to 106.49 million tonnes (mt) in February 2020 over February 2019. Meanwhile, the freight revenue rose 1.9% to Rs 10727.73 crore in February 2020.

The net tonne kilometers (ntkm) moved up 3.7% to 58332 million in February 2020. The revenue per tonne fell -4.3% to Rs 1007, while the revenue per ntkm declined -1.8% to 184 paise.

IR's freight loading stood at 1107.28 mt in April-February FY2020, showing a rise of 0.3% over 1103.51 mt in April-February FY2019. The freight loading at 1107.28 mt for April-February FY2020 was lower than the estimate of 1157.48 mt for the period.

Passenger traffic

The passenger traffic of IR increased 4.4% to 675.91 million in February 2020. Passenger traffic fell -0.7% to 7671.05 million in April-February FY2020. The passenger traffic is below than the budget estimate of 7867 million for April-February FY2020.
