At least 12 people were killed in a head-on crash on New Year's Day in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal Province, authorities said Thursday.

A minibus taxi collided head-on with a bakkie Wednesday night, killing nine people on the scene, reported Xinhua citing KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department said.

Three other people died later in hospital, the department added.

A forensic investigation was launched to establish the cause of this accident, Willies Mchunu of the department said.

The news came after the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) announced that the number of road deaths in December reached 1,184, or 39.5 deaths per day.
