The Delhi Police on Wednesday informed the Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) that 196 closed-circuit television cameras in 64 of the city's 108 police stations -- where a total of 435 CCTVs were installed -- were non-functional.
In a report to the women's panel, the city police said as many as 82 of the total police stations in the national capital remain without CCTVs.
The DCW has since sought a report from the police to tell it the reason for the delay in installing the CCTVs in these police stations despite the Supreme Court order of December 15, 2016.
The Delhi Police had decided to install CCTVs in 10 police stations where 10 CCTVs each were to be installed on a pilot basis, at Saket, K.N. Kataju Marg, Rohini North, Maurya Enclave, Jagat Puri, Madhu Vihar, Vasant Kunj, South Campus, GTB Enclave, and Rajouri Garden.
However, the project has allegedly not been implemented for the last two years.
"The Delhi police said CCTVs have been installed in 108 police stations whereas 82 remain without CCTVs. It said of the 108 police stations with CCTVs, 64 had non-functional CCTVs," a DCW official said.
The commission has asked for the time frame within which the CCTVs will be installed, he added.
