2 held in Bengal for printing fake expiry dates on medicines

Two persons were arrested on Thursday for allegedly re-printing fake expiry dates on medicine foils and containers and selling these off to the retailers, the police said.

The two, Kamal Jhunjhunwala (45) and Rinesh Saraogi (41), were apprehended following a complaint by the State Drug Control from 21 Canning Street here.

"While Saraogi used to run the printing press where the new expiry dates were reprinted, Jhunjhunwala owned a godown in Howrah district's Belur where the medicine was primarily stored," Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Vishal Gurg said.

The police have seized a box of medicine from the Canning Street printing press and three more similar boxes from the Belur godown.

"They have been charged with cheating and conspiracy under the Drug and Cosmetics Act, 1940. We are investigating since when they are running this business," the officer added.
