8,000 entries likely for Cycling Marathon

Over 8,000 cyclists, including 150 elite licensed cyclists, are expected to participate in the Vodafone Cycling Marathon to be held here March 1, next year.

The event is recognised by the Cycling Federation of India (CFI) and part of the proceeds will be utilised to support a variety of social causes in the areas of education, empowerment and environment, said Vodafone officials at a press conference, here Friday.

India Cares will be the Philanthropy partner and every rider can choose to support education of a child, sponsor vocational training for the differently-abled, support animal welfare, planting of trees and lake rejuvenation.

The event comprises four categories - Champion Race (60 kms), Passion Race (40 kms), Green Ride (20 kms) and Fashion Ride (5 kms).

The total prize money for the Champion Race will be Rs.10 lakh with the winner receiving Rs.2.5 lakh, the first runner up Rs.1.75 lakh, the second runner up Rs.1.25 lakh, and the third runner-up Rs.1 lakh. The remaining amount of Rs.3.5 lakh will be divided among 20 consolation winners.

For the Passion Race, the cash prize worth Rs.2 lakh will be divided among top five finishers and the participants in all the four categories will be given E-Certificates of merit and medals.

CFI secretary general Onkar Singh said: "The Cycling Federation of India has a vision to promote the wonderful sport of cycling and also has a social responsibility to create a greener, cleaner and healthier environment."
