The Resident Doctors Association of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday urged the hospital administration to improve the working conditions in the emergency department and hire more resident doctors.

The resident doctors have said that due to the understaffed emergency department, the current resident doctors were not able to handle the large number of patients inflow, which mostly ended up in a scuffle between the doctors and the attendants.

According to the association, the current numbers of doctors in AIIMS emergency department is only 7 against the required 20 senior resident doctors.

"The current staff in the emergency department is overburdened and under severe psychological stress, as in case if something goes wrong then the doctors have to face the consequences," said a senior resident of AIIMS and member of the resident association who did not want to be named.

Stating that AIIMS emergency is the face of the institution, the association has said: "The administration is busy in digitalisation but not taking any action to solve this hard core main issues and merely ask us (resident doctors) to handle this situation till the joining of new senior residents, which is going to happen only after August 10."

The resident doctors association also said that currently there are only 75 (non-academic) junior residents against 100 posts and most of residents will also resign as they will get closer to post graduation entrance exams in two months.

"Surgery in emergency conditions are even worst than this as only two senior residents are there. So it's impossible for them to be present in each shift for 24 hours. Everything in surgical emergency is left with only non academic junior residents," said the member of the association.
