An American hostage kidnapped by the Al Qaeda was freed Saturday during a military operation in Yemen.

"An American hostage who had been held captive by the Al Qaeda was freed in a successful military operation in Wadi Abdan region in the Shabwa province, in which 10 militants were also killed," Yemen's defence ministry said in a statement.

The Yemeni authorities did not reveal the name of the US national, Xinhua reported.

An earlier report by Xinhua Saturday cited an official as saying that American drones fired two missiles at a gathering of 13 mid-level Al Qaeda members in which 10 militants were killed , an official told Xinhua.

Thursday, the Yemen-based Al Qaeda wing threatened to kill an American photojournalist, Luke Somers, after the US government launched a rescue operation last month.
