An Indian Army soldier was killed late Friday in north Kashmir's Kupwara district where the army foiled an infiltration bid by militants on the Line of Control, sources said on Saturday.
Defence sources said a group of heavily armed guerrillas were challenged on the LoC by alert troops when they were trying to sneak into the Indian side late last evening.
"When challenged, terrorists resorted to heavy gunfire which was returned.
"The infiltrators were forced to withdraw back. One soldier identified as sepoy Ramesh Yadav was martyred in the gunfire exchanges with the terrorists", Defence sources said.
