Left parties on Monday blamed the "callous attitude" of the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh for the caste violence in Saharanpur district and demanded compensation for the victims and action against the accused.

Led by the CPI-M, Left parties held a demonstration here against the "brutal assault" on Dalits in Saharanpur and said attacks on Dalits and marginalized sections were rising under the Narendra Modi regime at the Centre and the Adityanath dispensation in Uttar Pradesh.

"It has been over a month since the Saharanpur attacks but the Adityanath government has not been able to get hold of the perpetrators," Communist Party of India-Marxist politburo member Brinda Karat said.

She blamed the callous attitude of the administration behind the violence.

Clashes between the Dalits and Rajputs erupted on May 5 in Shabbirpur village in Saharanpur after objections were raised over the playing of loud music in connection with the celebration of the birth anniversary of king Maharana Pratap.

Seven Left parties-- CPI-M, CPI, Forward Bloc, RSP, SUCI, CPI(ML) Liberation and Communist Ghadar Party -- asked the Adityanath government to pay monetary compensation to the victims, ensure medical treatment for the injured and immediate criminal action against the accused.

In a memorandum to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, the parties urged his intervention to establish peace in the area and ensure security and protection of the Dalits.
