Experts gathered here Wednesday to call for an efficient waste management strategy in Gurgaon, a thriving business hub at the edge of Delhi.
A workshop was organised by Citizen's Initiative Gurgaon First and supported by the DLF Foundation's arm, Gurgaon Renewal Mission.
"For Gurgaon to become a smart and sustainable city, it must have an efficient waste management strategy that focuses on recycling and reuse," said Shubhra Puri, Founder Director, Gurgaon First.
Lt. Gen. (retd) Rajender Singh of DLF said: "Of all the waste streams, waste from electrical and electronic equipment containing new and complex hazardous substances presents the fastest growing challenge that needs to be addressed pro-actively."
Rapid development is generating all kinds of waste in Gurgaon, which is becoming a serious health and sanitation hazard for residents.
Gurgaon generates about 600 tonnes of municipal solid waste, according to authorities. Experts fear the actual figure may be higher.
The workshop was attended by companies as well as the municipalities of Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ahmedabad and Delhi and senior officials from the central and state pollution control boards.
