Bhakra Dam water level higher than last year

Bhakra Dam is registering a higher inflow of water in river Sutlej, irrigation officials in Punjab said Tuesday.

The water level in the Bhakra Dam is 68 feet more than on the same day last year, said a spokesperson of the irrigation department.

"The Bhakra dam today recorded at a level of 1599.92 feet against 1531.88 feet last year on the same day. Water level is 68.04 feet more than as it was last year on the same day," he said.

The maximum level of the Gobind Sagar reservoir at the 225-metre high Bhakra Dam is 1,680 feet. With monsoon rains hitting the catchment area of the reservoir, the water level is expected to go up in the coming days.

He said that the inflow of water in Bhakra is 52,128 cusec against 42,501 on the same day last year. The release of water from Bhakra Dam is 32,783 cusec against 29,500 cusec last year.

At the Pong Dam on river Beas, the water level is 23.94 feet more than last year.

The Bhakra and Pong dams are located in Himachal Pradesh, along its border with Punjab.

At the Ranjit Sagar Dam on river Ravi, the water level is 13.45 metres more than last year, the spokesman said.

"Inflow of water in Pong Dam has been recorded as 17,401 cusec against 12,005 cusec on the same day last year and inflow of water in Ranjit Sagar Dam is 12,468 cusec against 11,293 cusec on the same day last year," he added.
