The Lok Sabha Monday passed a bill to repeal laws that have become obsolete or those whose retention as separate acts is unnecessary.

The Repealing and Amending (Second) Bill, 2014, was passed after Law Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda assured the house that the bill need not be sent to the standing committee as it does not involve repeal of any principal act.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a view that obsolete laws should be repealed.

The minister said the government was making efforts to bring another amendment bill for repealing 'obsolete laws'.

He said the government was considering amendments to some laws, including the Arbitration Act and Motor Vehicles Act to bring down pendency of cases in the courts.

Members from the Congress and Communist Party of India-Marxist suggested that the bill should be sent to the standing committee.

The bill seeks to repeal 90 laws, and pass amendments to two laws.

Of the 90 cts, 88 are being repealed entirely as they are amendment acts and the changes have been incorporated into the principal acts.

Apart from this, the bill amends some provisions of two acts, the Railways (Amendment) Act, 2008, and the Indian Maritime University Act, 2008, to rectify typographical errors.
