Madhya Pradesh Finance Minister Jayant Malaiya on Wednesday presented an over Rs 2 lakh crore budget for 2018-19 in the state assembly here. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party termed it "historical" while the opposition Congress called it "hopeless".

The budget of Rs 2,04,642 crore focuses on agriculture, health, education, poverty and employment. It is the last budget of the incumbent government before the 2018 assembly elections in the state.

The budget deficit is projected at Rs 26,780 crore.

"The budget crossed Rs 2 lakh crore and is historical. The budget also stressed on food, clothes, shelter, education and medicare for poor and farmers and their families," Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said.

BJP leaders Sanjay Pathak and Lal Singh Arya called it a people's budget and said it is for the common man.

On the other hand, Leader of Opposition Ajay Singh from the Congress called the budget "hopeless".

"The government is promising electricity to all the houses after 14 years in power due to the upcoming elections. The government is praising itself for the Krishi Karman Award, but the farmers are committing suicide. The budget is hopeless," he said.

Congress leader Govind Singh alleged that the government did not follow its policies, rather only announced new policies.
