Chandhok finishes 6th in Putrajaya ePrix

India's Karun Chandhok, driving for Mahindra Racing, eventually finished sixth to bring home eight points despite racing for a podium spot for most of the Formula E Putrajaya ePrix here Saturday.

Meanwhile, teammate Bruno Senna once again crashed out on the last lap of the 31-lap race at the 2.56 km at the Putrajaya Street Circuit.

Virgin Racing's Sam Bird had a dominant win to bag 25 points from Lucas di Grassi, who won the last round in Beijing, in his Audi Sport ABT electric car while e.dams-Renault's Sebastian Buemi came in third in the 52-minute ePrix.

Chandhok had a mixed day on the streets of Putrajaya after a pit stop problem cost him a podium spot. He finished sixth after fighting back from 11th in an eventful race that saw him running in second position for the first half of the race.

The result has helped the Chennai-born to move up to joint third in the drivers' championship with 18 points after completion of two rounds in the inaugural FIA Formula E Championship.

Chandhok, who started fifth, made the most of a slow starting Daniel Abt (Audi Sport ABT) to make his way to fourth while Senna also made up a place passing Abt. Two separate incidents on the opening lap brought out the safety car.

At the restart, both Mahindra Racing cars remained in contention for podium spots with Chandhok holding on to fourth before making his way into second by pulling off a move on pole sitter Oriol Servia. Later, a move on Jarno Trulli helped him jump to second.

Unfortunately, a delay in the pits lost Chandhok 14 seconds and positions as he slipped to 11th as he exited the pits. Senna, meanwhile, had also swapped to his second car and was ninth.

Th Brazilian was keen to make progress through the field and made up several positions but crashed on the last lap while in fourth position. Meanwhile, Chandhok did well to recover sixth.

"Unfortunately, the pit stop didn't go too well for us. One of our regular mechanics was taken to hospital yesterday so we're a man down so it wasn't quite as slick as normal. If we look at where the time we lost would have put us, we would have been easily on the podium," said Chandhok.

Mahindra Racing are now sixth in the standings with 18 points.

The next race will be held in Punta del Este, Uruguay, Dec 13.
