Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos and hundreds of Colombians sent messages of support to football star Radamel Falcao, who might miss the 2014 Brazil World Cup due to a knee injury sustained Wednesday.

Santos Thursday was one of the first to express his concern for the health of Falcao, a player with France's AS Monaco and star of the Colombian national team, reports Xinhua.

According to Jose Carlos Norohna, the surgeon who attended on him in Oporto, Portugal, Falcao injured a ligament in his left knee.

Santos said: "Falcao's injury is Colombians' main concern today. We do not know how serious the injury is, but I can say that all Colombians are keeping track of the situation.

"We wish Falcao a speedy recovery because we are all very eager to see him score goals for Colombia in the World Cup," said Santos.

Falcao was injured Wednesday during a match between Monaco and Chasselay and he will have to undergo a recovery period of four to six months, so he might not be able to play in Brazil 2014.

In a statement, the Colombian Football Federation confirmed the diagnosis of Falcao's injury and expressed its total support for "Tigre" as Falcao is known.

"We wish for the speedy recovery of the national goal scorer and the Colombian Football Federation will give all the support to the medical, technical and administrative team during the recovery stage," said the organisation.

Former coach of Colombia, Francisco Maturana, lamented Falcao's injury, but said he is confident that the player will soon recover and continue having success inside and outside his country.

Meanwhile, hundreds of Colombians sent support messages to Falcao via Twitter Thursday, wishing him a speedy recovery and saying they were confident that he will play in Brazil.

Colombia are in the World Cup Group C, along with Cote d'Ivoire, Japan and Greece.
