Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's parliamentary secretary Mukesh Sharma Saturday said the mayors of the three civic agencies should resign for poor preparedness for the downpour that brought the capital to its knees.

"It is because of the corruption and carelessness of the the BJP-ruled civic agencies that life in the city was thrown out of gear. The cleaning of drains has been done only on paper," Sharma said, while inaugurating a community hall here.

Delhi has three municipal bodies -- East Delhi Municipal Corporation, North Delhi Municipal Corporation and South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

A heavy downpour caused flooding and brought parts of the capital to a virtual standstill for hours Saturday, as several roads got flooded and vehicles were stranded.

A combination of waterlogged roads, uprooted trees and broken down vehicles resulted in chaos for hours Saturday.

"BJP leaders in all the three civic agencies do nothing except extort money. The mayors of all the civic agencies must resign," Sharma said.

He said the round-the-clock monsoon control rooms of the MCD had come a cropper.
