The Congress on Monday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on the BHU violence where girl students were thrashed by the police as they protested against the molestation of a colleague.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said while Modi is vocal on almost all issues, his silence over the violence on girls in his own parliamentary constituency Varanasi is questionable.

On Saturday, police resorted to a baton charge injuring some protesting students outside their hostel.

The students had been protesting since Thursday after a first-year student alleged that she was molested by three men on bikes within the campus.

"Our Prime Minister, who is vocal on every issue, takes on Twitter and also does his 'Mann ki Baat' is silent on the incident where girls are beaten up by the state police," Tewari said.

"There's a big difference between his (Modi) words and actions... On one side he calls for educating and protecting the girl child and when girls go to study, they are molested," he added.

Tewari said: "Instead of taking strict action against the culprits, Uttar Pradesh police rather resorted to baton charge on the girls. What kind of administration is this?"

He also took on Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Vice-Chancellor G.C. Tripathi, stating its shameful on his part to have suggested that girl students not step outside the hostel after 6 p.m.
