Accusing the CPI-M of injuring 26 of its activists, the BJP said on Tuesday that the Marxists were indulging in violence ahead of assembly elections in Kerala.

The way the Communist Party of India-Marxist was approaching the polls due in May "speaks the language of violence and arrogance", BJP spokesman V.V. Rajesh told the media.

He said CPI-M activists attacked former Kerala state president V. Muraleedharan at Kazhakootam on the suburbs on Thiruvananthapuram on Monday night.

The attack "left 26 of our workers injured" and they were now in hospital, said Rajesh, adding Muraleedharan too had been admitted to a hospital.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, which is desperately trying to win a seat in the assembly polls, has called a district shutdown.

But it has exempted educational institutions and transport in view of the ongoing school exams.
