All people on board a fishing trawler believed to be fleeing Syria have been safely taken aboard a Cypriot cruise ship, Cypriot authorities said Thursday.
The Salamis Philoxenia cruise ship was returning from a cruise to the Greek islands when it was diverted to an area about 100 km off the southwest shores of Cyprus after a distress signal form the trawler, Xinhua reported.
Rescuers on helicopters said the Salamis had moved alongside the trawler from the windward side providing protection against strong winds and rough seas.
All refugees, including many women and children, were helped up the ladder of the cruise ship without any mishap.
The operator of the cruise ship said arrangements were made to provide food for the adults and special meals for young children.
Cyprus Interior Minister Socrates Hasikos described the rescue operation as difficult because of high seas.
The trawler, called the Abdullah, and its crew are believed to be escorted by the Cypriot police patrol boats to port for questioning.
