The Delhi Cabinet on Friday gave administrative approval and expenditure sanction for the much-awaited project for installing about 1.4 lakh CCTV cameras across the capital, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal told the Delhi Assembly.

The intsllation will cost Rs 571.40 crore (capital cost of Rs 320.96 crore and maintenance cost of Rs 250.44 crore) for a period of five years.

On an average, each Assembly constituency will have 2,000 cameras. Delhi has a 70-member Assembly.

"The Cabinet has approved the camera installation across the city. The people were facing trouble as crime has risen in Delhi," Kejriwal said.

"The Centre has failed to ensure law and order in Delhi. The Home Minister, Lieutenant Governor and the police too have failed," he said.

The project got the in-principle approval three years ago, he added.

Speaking outside the Assembly, Kejriwal said this would help in reducing the crime by almost half.

Attacking the BJP, he said they wanted to have more money through licensing.

Installation of CCTV cameras in Delhi was one of the key points in the manifesto of the Aam Aadmi Party to improve the security and safety of the citizens.
