The Delhi government on Thursday set up six teams to check hoarding and black marketing of onions in the national capital.
The step was taken after reports emerged that onions were being sold at Rs.65 at various places despite the city government's claim of selling the vegetable at Rs.30 at its Fair Price Shops.
"The food and civil supplies department on Thursday dispatched six teams to various wholesale markets," a government official said.
"The teams will check the availability of onions in the wholesale markets and also report about any hoarding or black-marketing (of onions) by unscrupulous elements," he added.
Besides, food and supplies officers have been directed to keep a strict watch on the Fair Price Shops and Mobile Vans engaged for retail sale of onions.
They have been asked to ensure that onions are sold at specified rates or Rs.30 per kg.
