The Delhi government on Tuesday approved the proposal for a study by the state Transport Department in order to strengthen public transport system.

The proposal of this study to be supervised by Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System Limited (DIMTS) was approved in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday.

The study of "Route Rationalization and Last Mile Connectivity" will cover all bus routes -- DTC, Cluster, Gramin Sewa etc, and DMRC feeder bus system and chartered buses, an official statement said.

"It will seek to develop criteria for delineation of the operation area of electric rickshaws. The issue of buses, Gramin Sewa and RTVs not working optimally will be solved after the study is done.

"It will also solve the problems of low frequency, inadequate coverage, and crowding resulting in customer satisfaction and better efficiency," it said.

The updated travel database is expected to help planners understand the user needs and launch new schemes.

DIMTS will also include detailed household travel survey -- 1 per cent of total households in Delhi as per existing survey norms -- apart from planning all modes.

DIMTS also plans to conduct work place survey at Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurgaon and Bahadurgarh to capture interaction of these cities with Delhi.

The study will be completed by DIMTS in a total time frame of six months.
