Veteran filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan on Saturday supported the Narendra Modi-led central government's decision to demonetise certain currency notes, observing that people will have to put up with the temporary problems for the greater good of weeding out black money.
"It may create some temporary problem for everybody, including myself, but we have to put up with that. Let us welcome that if it helps in the days to come. You never know. I hope for the best," Gopalakrishnan said at the 22nd Kolkata International Film Festival.
Expanding on the "big problem" of black money and fake money in circulation, the director emphasised that the common man is suffering due to the issue.
"Common man is finding it very difficult. Consumer goods prices are going up everyday. There is another class... they don't even ask the price. They just take the material at whatever price is quoted and buy it. Those people have made the increase in the price," he said.
He said these people either have access to easy money, they are too rich or have acquired "ill-gotten money".
"I see it as a good measure because we have to put a check on it. There is a rumour that foreign countries are printing currency notes and bringing it by shiploads. So, I see it as a positive way," he added.
