Three policemen were among eight people killed Thursday in two suicide attacks in Baghdad that also wounded 35 other people, a source in the Iraqi police told Efe news agency.

He explained that a car bomb exploded at an Iraqi police checkpoint at Al Yousifiyah, south of the capital. This first attack was the deadliest, as it killed three officers and two civilians, and injured 25 people.

Three more people were killed and 10 othwers were injured when a bomber detonated the explosive belt he was wearing in the Al Adel district, west of Baghdad, the source noted.

According to an earlier report by Xinhua news agency, several policemen were among the casualties of the first blast which destroyed several nearby civilian cars, the source said.

Al Yousifiyah, in the sectarian mixed province of Babil, has witnessed the latest Sunni insurgency against the Shia-led government.

Iraq has been witnessing some of the worst violence in years. At least 12,282 civilians were killed and 23,126 others injured in 2014, making it the deadliest year since the sectarian violence in the 2006-2007 period, according to a recent UN report.
