Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Friday hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Pakistan as a "good step" but said India-Pakistan ties must have stability.

"The re-engagement with Pakistan is a good step and a very welcome development," Abdullah tweeted as Modi was set to land in Lahore to meet his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif on his way back from Kabul to New Delhi.

"However, more than grand gestures we need consistency (in India-Pakistan relations)," the National Conference leader said in tweets.

"Indo-Pakistan relations have been plagued by knee-jerk reactions and a lack of consistency. Looking towards (the) two prime ministers to correct this this time."
