The University Grants Commission (UGC) has urged students taking admission in Delhi University to enroll under the three-year undergraduate programme which was prevalent prior to the introduction of the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP).

The UGC also urged students to pay the fees according to the three-year programme.

In a statement, the UGC said the four-year undergraduate programme introduced by the University of Delhi is not in consonance with the National Education Policy (1986) and 10+2+3 structure envisaged under it and the University of Delhi has not followed the procedure prescribed in the Delhi University Act, 1922.

The UGC has directed the varsity, through its order dated June 20/22, that admissions for the academic year 2014-15 to the general degree programmes in various colleges will be of three-year duration only.

The UGC has also constituted a standing committee to advise the varsity on the change over from FYUP to the three-year programme and for implementing the UGC directive.

The varsity's academic council, meanwhile, held a meeting Saturday and adopted a resolution saying the programme was in sync with the NEP.

According to the university officials, the resolution was passed by a majority of 80 members. There were 10 dissenters.

Under the FYUP introduced last year, a student can exit after the third year with a bachelors degree. However, if the student completes all four years he/she will be awarded a bachelors degree with honours.
