Gurgaon observes another 'Car Free Day'

The Car Free Day-2 (CFD) was observed on Tuesday in selected regions of the city where Gurgaon police chief Navdeep Singh Virk and Joint Commissioner of Police Bharti Arora rode bicycles.

The first Car Free Day was observed on September 22 more in the breach, with daily snarls present as usual.

Commissioner Virk, JCP (Traffic) Arora, JCP (Headquarters) Saurabh Singh and several deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners of police rode bicycles in dedicated car-free areas allotted to them.

The officers, along with CEOs and working officials rode cycles, shared vehicles, the Delhi Metro, the Rapid Metro, buses and taxis to decongest the millennium city roads.

Four major IT corridors were identified to make the campaign more concentrated -- DLF Cyber City, Cyber Park area, Golf Course Road and Electronic City.

While Gurgaon celebrated Car Free Day, differences between JCP Arora and Commissioner Virk came out in the open later over an alleged high-profile rape case.

Arora has accused Virk of harassment and mental torture and interfering in the alleged rape case, monitored by her.

Gurgaon's former deputy commissioner P.R. Bhardwaj's son Ajay Bharwdaj and his family members were booked under charges of rape and criminal intimidation in the case.

The complainant was Ajay Bhardwaj's former live-in partner, a resident of Ardee City, Gurgaon, with whom she has a child.

Arora claimed to have found that the offences mentioned in the FIR could not be made out, but Virk wanted to indict the accused.

JCP Arora and Commissioner Virk have levelled serious charges against each other and complained to Haryana's Director General of Police Yashpal Singhal.

The news of ongoing 'war' emerged before the Car Free Day movement started in the morning.

The commissioner and joint commissioner rode cycles from different area and reached the HUDA city centre Metro Station.

Later, both called press conferences at their offices separately to justify the allegations they have levelled against each other in the rape case investigation.

In the press meet, Arora demanded an inquiry by Central Bureau of Investigation into the matter, while Virk said Arora was levelling false allegations to hide her own illegal actions, as a report to take action against her has been sent to the Haryana DGP.
