IAS aspirants protesting exam changes detained

Delhi Police Monday detained 60 people aspiring to join the ranks of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), who were protesting against the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and demanding more time to prepare for the examination.

The candidates taking the competitive examination were protesting ever since the UPSC introduced a change in the syllabus and in the pattern of the preliminary and main civil service examinations.

"They were detained at Shahjahan Road in New Delhi area (where the offices of the UPSC are located), as they were protesting without permission and refused to leave when asked to do so," a Delhi Police official said.

Last week too, these candidates took out a candlelight march at Jantar Mantar as a mark of protest.

"There has been a change in the syllabus and the pattern of the civil service examinations, so we were just demanding extra time to prepare for it, and we organised a silent protest. But the police arrested us," Amresh Kumar, a candidate from Bihar, said.
