All staff in the Indian consulate in Afghanistan that was attacked Friday are safe, said Syed Akbaruddin, external affairs ministry spokesperson.

The consulate in Herat city was attacked by three gunmen in the morning.

"All the staff of the Indian consulate are safe. The attack is continuing and more details can be given only once it stops," Akbaruddin told IANS here.

Akbaruddin also tweeted: "Brave ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) personnel and Afghan soldiers rebut the attackers. Operations are underway. Indian and Afghan officials are in touch over the attack. Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh is monitoring the situation."
