An Indian man, who was accused of raping a six-year-old schoolboy in Bahrain, has been acquitted by a court there for lack of evidence.

Prosecutors had claimed that the 23-year-old man, who worked as a cleaner, had raped the boy in a toilet of a private school at Isa Town in December last year.

"The defendant was acquitted because there was no sign of injury to prove the victim was raped," the Gulf Daily News quoted the high criminal court ruling as stating.

"Therefore due to the lack of evidence, he was found not guilty."

The boy, the son of a policeman, had testified that he had left the toilet door open when the cleaner came from behind, grabbed him and raped him.

However, the cleaner claimed that male cleaners were not allowed inside the boys' toilet.
