The head coach of Iran's Persepolis soccer team Yahya Golmohammadi stepped down after poor results in the professional football league.

Persepolis also lost to Sepahan in the final match of Iran's Hazfi Cup earlier this week and could not qualify for 2014 AFC League competitions, reports Xinhua.

The 42-year-old coach had replaced Portuguese coach Manuel Jose last December.

"I believe that it was the best decision. Now, Persepolis officials have enough time to appoint their best option. It was time to go," Golmohammadi was quoted as saying in the Iranian media.

Zlatko Kranjcar, the current coach of Sepahan, is reportedly a candidate to replace Golmohammadi.

Kranjcar, the 56-year-old Croat, had joined Persepolis in July 2009 on a two years contract but was sacked in September 2009.
