Beirut, Nov 20 (IANS/EFE) Islamic State (IS) militants Thursday raided several internet cafes in the northeastern Syrian city of Al-Mayadin, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said.

During the raids, the militants detained two people and took them to an unknown place. They also checked the contents of mobile phones that were found in cafes in the city.

In August, the IS imposed censorship on all information sent from the areas under their control in the region.

They also forced activists operating there to swear allegiance to the jihadis' proclaimed caliphate in Syria and Iraq, which they declared in late June.

Under the IS rules, all photographs, written and video material sent from the area must be approved first by the IS information office.

The radical group has also imposed restrictions on women's dress and banned the sale of tobacco.
