Hundreds of candidates appearing in exams for government jobs on Sunday created a ruckus at the New Jalpaiguri Junction railway station in West Bengal on not finding enough seats on trains, a Railway Protection Force official said.

"A mob of candidates from Bihar and parts of West Bengal ran amok at the railway station in the morning and obstructed movement of several trains, including Delhi-bound Avadh Assam Express that was stranded for more than two hours," Pranav Jyoti Sharma of North East Frontier Railway said.

"The mob also tried to dislodge bona fide passengers from their seats," he said.

Informed sources said the protesters blocked the tracks to demand arrangement of a special train to accommodate them.

RPF personnel resorted to a lathichage to bring the situation under control.

A special train to Barauni in Bihar was later arranged to ferry the protesters, the sources said.

Railway officials said they had no prior intimation on the huge rush. "There was no advisory from the state government," Sharma said.

Similar protests were reported from Malda and Cooch Behar railway stations.
