Kerala biodiversity efforts praised in South Korea

The efforts by the Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB) have been praised at 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, an official said Thursday.

Its presentation centred on being the only state in India that has formed a biodiversity management committee (BMC) in each and every village council, most of them by now have prepared their people's biodiversity register (PBR).

This edition consists of a series of strategic, substantive, administrative and budgetary issues, including a mid-term review of the progress being made toward the goals of the strategic plan for biodiversity 2011-2020, K.P. Laladhas, member secretary of the KSBB, told IANS.

The BMC is a statutory body comprising elected local government representatives and experts from the village councils and the PBR comprises a document that lists out the flora and fauna in all the villages.

A two-member KSBB delegation is among the 8,000 environmentalists from every country in the world attending the meeting.
